<link>https://repository.cuk.ac.ke/handle/123456789/219</link>
<description>Income Generation of University Libraries in Kenya:
Wandera, M.; Wambari, C.
Sustainability has been elevated from doing to the level of being; involving mission, vision and shared values. The shared values are the Triple, Bottom down approach which is the global agenda. The practice of education for sustainable development (ESD) is diverse and involves pillars, social, economic and environmental. This study seeks to address the economic pillar in the higher education setting, mainly university libraries as its main objective, since higher education is now the change agent for sustainability. The study has used system theory and stakeholder theories using survey design involving, trends from global perspective in knowledge creation, mainly sustainability curriculum as in Sweden and Australia higher education as well as California in the United States of America (USA). Further mention was in the United Kingdom (U.K) and Turkish foundation universities, Malaysia Waqf Universities and the entrepreneurial mindset of the Pakistan higher education. The various hurdles in funding university higher education and libraries mainly on policies and decision is given, like in Nigeria Universities and Jordan Universities and Zambia just like positive examples in Ghana, Botswana, Uganda (Makerere) and Malawi. The study has recommended various sources of income generation for university libraries and adoption of models as in Malawi, during 2008/2009 and 2009/2010, the library raised 7.2% and 5.4% of their income respectively and other innovative models as undertaken by the University of Botswana in Africa besides lessons of innovative models at New Jersey state universities among other global sustainability curriculum trends as in Sweden and Australian Higher Education which can be adapted for university libraries as in Kenya.

<title>Digitization and Preservation of Academic Library Collections in Kenya:</title>
<link>https://repository.cuk.ac.ke/handle/123456789/218</link>
<description>Digitization and Preservation of Academic Library Collections in Kenya:
Wambari, C.
Digitization can be described as the preservation of a library collection in a digital format to make the collection easily accessible ad usable. Digitization is the process of converting documents and work of arts into digital image or conversion of hard copies to an electronic format. Digital preservation can be described as the process of preservation information in digital format to ensure durability, easy accessibility and even intellectual integrity. One of the main purposes of converting into digital format is to enhance access of information and knowledge and also to preserve the library collection for future generations. Digitization enhances information delivery since most users will not have to physically visit the libraries to search for materials. Most academic libraries have embraced digitization as the new trend in managing information materials and preserving their library collections, it has become one of the newest methods of managing information materials since this new technology is allowing users to access information from the comfort of their homes and offices. Digitization involves planning, funding and the process of digitizing. With the introduction of digital technology into the process of production and the storage of information most libraries are being made to go digital. Digitization has enabled users to access information for different purposes and has also ensured protection of information materials for their intrinsic value. Over the past years libraries are embracing digital preservation as a process of holding the electronic information and have even automated the library services, though in Africa digital preservation and digital development has been slow. Proliferation of electronic materials and the quest to access materials in remote areas are some of the reasons that have made digitization an important aspect in managing and preservation of information. Libraries are essential for academic institution, in order for libraries to promote teaching, learning and research they are expected to provide excellent information resources, digital preservation has totally revolutionized the way information is packaged, stored and disseminated and also how users are seeking and accessing the information they need. This paper aims to discuss the benefits of digitization and the issues that affect digital preservation in developing societies with particular emphasis on Academic libraries as its main objective. The research design is content analysis of case surveys of developing societies. This paper also attempts to uncover the challenges encountered by academic libraries in the digitization process. Some of the challenges include funding/economic challenges, legal aspects, and availability of skilled manpower, technological challenges and maintenance of the equipments for digitization. Other issues discussed has included the way forward to the challenges that have been mentioned while also considering the constraints that libraries and institutions have been working under. Digital preservation is one sure way of ensuring that libraries in Kenya contribute to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to quality education by ensuring access of information and knowledge. The paper concluded that digital preservation is essential in modern day libraries because of the emerging trends in user behaviour, and that information managers must meet with the practical skills needed in order to implement the digital preservation process.

<title>Copyright Issues and Digital Preservation in Academic Libraries:</title>
<link>https://repository.cuk.ac.ke/handle/123456789/217</link>
<description>Copyright Issues and Digital Preservation in Academic Libraries:
Wambari, C.
Digital preservation is a process that ensures that any information in a digital format is accessible, usable and remains valuable to users. Digital preservation keeps materials usable and alive. Copyright is the exclusive legal right given to the originator or author to publish, film, prints or record artistic, musical and literary works. It is created by laws of a country to grant a creator of an original work rights for use and distribution. Academic libraries have been tasked with ensuring that they make materials available to students and faculty members in support of teaching, learning and research. Libraries house copyrighted materials and also materials that are in the public domain. The purpose of this literature review used is exploratory based on survey design using content analysis as its design. In essence the understanding of copyright laws by digital librarians, copy-right related problems that arise during digitization and what copyright issues digital librarians face as they perform their duties in developing and populating their institutions repositories. Digital age has unleashed new sets of problems that stem from the ease of access to information provided by the internet. The terrain is rough and unchartered; never before have issues of access and protection clashed in such a powerful way. The users of copyrighted materials are hard-pressed to stay up to date with the latest regulations and cases. Copyright holders have been defending their rights under the copyright law and the penalties for infringing the laws are very harsh. The balance between the rights of copyright holders and users of the information has been tenuous and is considered to be an “asymmetric distribution of uncertainty”. The prevalence of internet use has only exacerbated the issue, and misunderstandings of copyright laws are common. Academic libraries have been tasked with providing their users with copyrighted digital information by providing access, storing and even exhibiting the resources. Academic libraries play an important role as they are responsible for facilitating research, teaching and learning in institutions of higher learning. They ensure access to relevant information in the quest for academic excellence. The preservation of digital publications involves various issues. Copyright laws and licensing may prevent problems libraries that wish to preserve digital resources in the long-term or even short-term. This paper will be useful to the digital librarians and repository managers in understanding copyright issues that are important and relevant in digitization and digital preservation.
